Colorado
Colorado’s Supreme Court has seven justices. Currently there are six Democratic justices and one Republican justice. Colorado conducts retention elections, which means that the governor appoints a justice, who then must be retained or voted out by the voters at the end of the term. A full term is ten years. In 2020, two justices are up for re-election. This means that if a Justice receives a majority Yes vote in the election, s/he will serve for another term on the court before appearing on the ballot for another retention vote. If a Justice receives a majority No vote, s/he will be replaced by Democratic Governor Jared Polis.
Justice Melisa Hart (D) has been on the court since 2017, when she was appointed by Democratic Governor John Hickenlooper. She is now running for retention for a full ten-year term.
Carlos Samour (D) has been on the court since 2018, when he was appointed by Democratic Governor John Hickenlooper. He is now running for retention for a full ten-year term.
