Texas has two high courts: the Supreme Court, which is the court of last resort for all civil cases, and the Court of Criminal Appeals, which is the court of last resort for all criminal cases. Both the Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeals have nine justices, and all eighteen of the justices are Republican.
Texas conducts partisan elections for its judges. Four justices from the Supreme Court and three justices from the Court of Criminal Appeals are up for re-election.
On the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Nathan Hecht (R), has been on the court since 1988, and has been Chief Justice since 2014. He is running against Amy Clark Meachum (D), who has been on the Texas 201st District Court since 2011.
Justice Jane Bland (R) has been on the court since 2019, and is running against Kathy Cheng, a private attorney.
Justice Jeffrey Boyd (R) has been on the court since 2012, and is running against Staci Williams, who has been on the Texas 101st District Court since 2014.
Justice Brett Busby (R) has been on the court since 2019, and he is running against Gisela Triana (D), who has been a judge on the Texas Third District Court of Appeals since 2019.
On the Court of Criminal Appeals, Justice Bert Richardson (R), who has been on the court since 2015, is running against Judge Elizabeth Davis Frizell (D), who was a judge on the Dallas County Criminal District Court from 2007 until 2017.
Justice Kevin Patrick Yeary (R), who has been on the court since 2015, is running against Tina Yoo Clinton (D), who has been on the Dallas County Criminal District Court since 2018.
Justice David Newell (R), who has been on the court since 2015, is running against Judge Brandon Birmingham (D), who has been on the Texas 292nd District Court since 2014.
